Penis Curvatures – Causes & Treatment

by penisguide on

Penis curvature is nothing but an abnormal bend in the penis in erect state. While penis curvature is considered very common amongst men, some suffer from severe curvature causing pain in the penis. Some amount of curvature in the penis does not hamper the sexual life in men, abnormal curvature can cause discomfort to both the partners during sex. Unfortunately most men seem to ignore this problem either due to lack of knowledge or due to embarrassment. Either ways if such penis curvature is not treated on time, it can lead to inability to have intercourse & sometimes ending in impotence.

Common causes of curvature in penis?

Though penis curvature can be caused due to variety of reason, here are few most common causes:

  • Peyronie’s disease
  • Congenital curvature (curvature from birth)
  • Physical injury to the penis
  • Tight clothes (pants & underwear)
  • Family history
  • Curvature can also be caused due to excessive sleeping on stomach causing pressure on the penis area

What is penis curvature

The penis consists of sponge like tissues called the corpus cavernosa & conduit, called the urethra. Urethra is where the urine is discarded from the body. The corpora cavernosa tissues are surrounded by elastic tissues called the tunica albuginea.

Types of curvature of penis

Most common types of penile curvatures include:

  • Peyronie’s disease – peyronie’s disease can happen at any age with striking symptoms at old age
  • Congenital penis curvature

Peyronie’s disease

Peyronie’s disease also known as the penis hardening occurs when hard fibrous plaque is formed on the top of the penis area (tunica albuginea of the penis). This band or accumulation of the fibrous tissue results in the curve in the penis. Since the formation is hard, it does not allow the penis to expand, as it normally would during an erection & restricts one side of penis causing the curvature.

Peyronie’s diseases can be identified with the following symptoms: Formation of hard fibrous tissue on the penis, deformation of the penis, severe pain during erection. Erectile dysfunction can also be a symptom in some men.

Treatment options for Peyronie’s disease

Peyronie’s diseases can be detected & treated at any stage, its always good to begin the treatment during the early stages to ensure full recovery. Following are some of the peyronie’s diseases treatments:

1. Verapamil – Verpamil injections are usually injected in the affected area on the penis to block production of collagen. However you can imagine the pain assocaited with injection in the penis. Additionally verpamil injections also have their own side effects. (read more on Side effects of verpamil)

2. Penis extenders (e.g. SizeGenetics) – Penis extenders or stretchers work on the principle of traction to increase the size of the penis. Such extenders can be of great help in peyronie’s disease as they can exert a traction force, causing significant reduction in curvature of penis. However it is important to use the extenders on a regular basis to ensure reduction in curvature. Extenders like Sizegenetics are highly recommended due to their quality.

3. Surgery: The surgery for peyronie’s disease involves complete or partial removal of the fibrous plaque. Shortening of the penis to remove the plaque is always a side effect.

Vitamin E o Colchicina: It is taken orally as an aid or supplement. However, it only has a small role in the correction of the penile curvature

Congenital penis curvature

Congenital penis curvature is nothing but curvature in penis from birth. This condition is usually detected in young men, teens. Such penile curvature occurs when corpora cavernosa grows more than the urethra. This results in causing the erection to curve downwards or to one side.

Treatment options for congenital penile curvature include surgery or use of extenders. However you should note that the extenders should be worn for longer duration for full recovery. Stretchers like Sizegenetics are useful in such cases due to the quality of material & the comfort. In case of extreme curvatures, its always recommended to visit your GP before using the extenders.
