Causes of Erectile Dysfunction

Erectile dysfunction primarily occurs due to damage to nerves or arteries. Even smoking, obesity, alcohol, lack of exercise can contribute to this disorder. Erection is usually caused due to the sensory or mental stimulus. The brain sends impulses which lead to loosening of the muscles in corpora cavernosa. This leads to more blood flow & creates a pressure in the corpora cavernosa which in turn expands the penis. The blood flow is locked in the penis due to the tunica albuginea which helps in sustaining the erection.

This disorder may also be caused due to various conditions like vascular disease or diabetes. Even psychological factors like stress, anxiety, guilt can also be a reason for erectile dysfunction.

Erectile Dysfunction Drugs

There are various drugs available in the market to help you with the erectile disorder. These drugs work on the same principle, to increase the blood flow into the penis and thus sexually stimulate men and causing an erection. However do remember that these drugs do not cure erectile dysfunction nor solve the issue permanently. These drugs are designed to help you maintain the erection during sex. Sildenafil is the most popular drug used in the treatment of erectile dysfunction. (Viagra, Revatio are some of the examples). These drugs are phosphodiesterase inhibitors & work by increasing blood flow in the penis. The increased blood flow enables you to achieve and maintain an erection. Variants of Tadalafil & Vardenafil are also some of the popular erectile dysfunction drugs.

Per Wikipedia,
“Sildenafil (Viagra or Revatio) is an inhibitor of cGMP-specific phosphodiesterase type 5. It enhances the vasodilatory effects in the corpus cavernosum and is used in treatment of erectile dysfunction.”

“Tadalafil is a PDE5 inhibitor, marketed in form of pill & used for treating erectile dysfunction (ED) under the brand name Cialis; and under the brand name Adcirca for the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension. ”
